Understanding Great Art

HOW TO READ A PAINTING

At last! An intelligent article on how to understand a painting. Or a sculpture. Or even a high-fashion model with a lampshade on her head. (A little light recently went on in my head, and I realized that high-fashion models aren’t necessarily supposed to look pretty or elegant. They are supposed to be works of semi-abstract modern art. I always had wondered what those designers thought they were doing. Now I know.)

THE NATIONAL GALLERY OF ART, WASHINGTON

The first time I visited the NATIONAL GALLERY, my feet got to hurting, the way they do in museums. So I slipped out of my shoes and stood quietly looking at the paintings, minding my own business and holding my shoes in one hand. And a guard landed on me. There’s a health department regulation that says people can’t walk, or, apparently, stand, around Washington in their bare feet. I of course felt the injustice of this. Here I was, improving myself and doing the country no harm, and my feet were doing no harm either, and the health department had to horn in.

Fortunately, it’s now possible to tour the NATIONAL GALLERY online, in complete comfort. Take off your shoes, if you like, and click below:

NOT AN ORDINARY SCREENSAVER

You can now download AARON, a program that will create one freshly painted work of art after another – works of art never seen before – as a screensaver on your computer. Most of the paintings are abstract, but some include figures. AARON represents the life work of Dr. Harold Cohen, head of the Center for Research in Computing and the Arts at the University of California. You can use the following site about Aaron to begin a study of AI (artificial intelligence or machine intelligence), or you can simply download and enjoy a screensaver like no one else’s.
