AMAZING LANGUAGE RESOURCE!

You’re going to travel abroad and would like to learn a few words in, say, Slovak? Or Afrikaans, Italian, Hindi, or Croatian? This site has amazing helps for you. It not only gives “free language tools,” it tells where to find dictionaries in many languages. And, if you’ve traveled abroad, you know that the basic basic is NUMBERS in the language of the country you’re in, so you can discuss prices. This site tells where you can find “numbers in over 4500 languages.” That ought to do you. For translators, translation software . . . find the addresses here. And, ultimately, you will find “Eureka, the new search engine for language and translation resources.” As I tour the Internet, I get harder and harder to impress. But this site is impressive!

IT’S NOT TOO LATE TO LEARN FRENCH, GERMAN

If you’re planning a trip to France in a few weeks, it’s probably too late to learn to read Madame Bovary in the original French, but not too late to learn how to talk your way through a number of tourist situations in French. Or in German, Spanish, Italian, or Greek. Or in several other languages taught through this BBC site.

But this excellent BBC site does more than teach you tourist terms. Their motto is “A bit at a time, in your own time,” and, if you choose, you can learn a fair bit about a language, in easy steps, by listening to a native speaker. And the price is right. Like so many good things on the Internet, these lessons are free.

A LANGUAGE EXCHANGE COMMUNITY

They suggest you “find a partner at the online community and practice your second language (any language) with a native speaker who is learning your language. We host your online practice with lesson plans, text chat rooms and more.”
